Just finished watching Heroes S4 on DVD - it was like. so the cliche goes, eating Chinese food. After I finished watching it, I was full but an hour later I felt curiously unsatisfied.

This time it is SyFy's Alphas. The blurb sounds a bit familiar:
Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Using physical feats and uniquely advanced mental abilities, this unlikely team takes the law into their own hands and uncovers what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

A Heroes by any other name .....

This article about some of the possible reasons that Heroes was not good enough to renew is overly harsh in a number of areas, I feel, but the five reasons given are applicable to any show:
1) Have A Good Reason For Your Characters To Be There
2) Don't Make Any Of Your Characters Too Powerful
3) Don't Repeat Yourselves
4) It's Okay If You Don't Keep Raising The Stakes
5) Don't Lose Track Of What The Show Is About

NBC cancelled Heroes. I can't say that I'm surprised, given the latest US viewing figures but I'm still disappointed. Having watched S1-3 on DVD recently, the series seemed far stronger than when I watched it (intermittently) on TV. I really haven't seen any of S4 to comment on the continued decline.

Just finished watching the last 9 episodes of S3 Heroes today - and I still haven't found what it was that made me feel that S3 was such crap that first time through.
Spoilers from this point on. )

I've just sent most of the last few days watching the first 16 episodes of S3 Heroes, all the way up to Building 26 and a curious thing has happened. I have liked, understood and followed all of the episodes so far! Sure, it's not TV perfection but the tale sure is twisty and turny - and this is exactly what was difficult with it first time through.

For me, I found it hard to watch S3 when it was on TV because, in addition to the 18 month delay we had here between the end of S2 and the start of S3, they changed the time-slot, pre-empted it a few times and generally screwed with the schedule. With a story as complex as this one, missing a single scene, let alone an entire episode, meant I lost the entire thread, especially spoilers here )

Overall, I am still engaged and absorbed. Perhaps I'll even manage to watch the entire season and be OK with it? Tomorrow will tell.

As I watched episodes 10 & 11 of Heroes S2, I realised several things:
1) I hadn't seen either of these episodes (nor had I seen #9 either) and
2) the reason I hadn't seen these was because of the writer's strike in 2007.

That year all three major networks were, for the first time, trying to show all popular US shows just 24-48 hours after they showed in the US. When the strike was going to happen, they stopped showing Heroes S2 at #8 and then screwed around with the remaining episodes, trying to stretch them out over the next few months, also changing the timeslot repeatedly. In the end, I gave up in disgust.

When S3 came back on, it was enormously delayed so that was something like 18 months later. By that time I had long since forgotten how S2 ended. In addition they started changing timeslots repeatedly. I just couldn't get into S3 by that time and gave up.

I have to say that Heroes is growing on me - watching it on DVD seems to improve it because the continuity of the story is more apparent.

Just finished watching the first 9 episodes of this season - and it is damned good. I still haven't got to whatever it was that drove me away from the series somewhere around this point. Sure, Maya and Alejandro are rote and dreary but they're not deal-breakers either. There are some plot twists which are jaw-dropping which still enthrall me. I am starting to think that I missed out on some good TV, stopping when I did!
