This article about some of the possible reasons that Heroes was not good enough to renew is overly harsh in a number of areas, I feel, but the five reasons given are applicable to any show:
1) Have A Good Reason For Your Characters To Be There
2) Don't Make Any Of Your Characters Too Powerful
3) Don't Repeat Yourselves
4) It's Okay If You Don't Keep Raising The Stakes
5) Don't Lose Track Of What The Show Is About
