Yes, the "cheap" pet we picked a few years ago just cost me $1000 in vet bills for a blocked urethra and subsequent treatment. He's back home tonight but he still looks very ill.

After we distributed Xmas presents to everyone this morning, we discovered that someone got no presents - that cat. His response?

Not. Happy. Jan. )

..... or the day he became Mr Head. Yes, no more bucket! The vet was extremely pleased with the healing and took the bucket off. She did say that if he licked the wound too much, we could put the bucket back on for a day ot two. So far that hasn't been an issue although he has licked just about every other part of his body until it is clean, clean and yet cleaner again! He's also run around the house, found all the straws he had stashed about the place and played with them non-stop - except for when he was cleaning himself, of course!

In short he looks overjoyed that the collar is finally gone.

The cat still has his bucket on, not because there's anything particular wrong with him but because the vet's was shut today due to the bad weather - tree down across the driveway or something like that. He's going back tomorrow.

Just to fool us, the cat was a complete nutter tonight, running away from us when we wanted to get him onto the bench and then squirming and writhing when we had to clean his wound. Got it done but it was a real struggle tonight. The good thing is the wounds both look really clean and the cat is going back to the vet tomorrow so we may not need to do all this stuff after tomorrow. Let's hope!

The cat is anticipating his twice-daily clean more and more - tonight he jumped on the bench as I was making a hot drink and stared meowing at me before we even got his wounding cleaning kit out. If we're not careful, he'll grab the towel off the back of the chair and drag it up to the bench himself one of these days!

The cat never ceases to amaze me - today he jumped up on the bench and lay down on the towel we use to cover the bench whilst we wash his wounds. He then meowed at us most insistently, almost demanding to get on with it!

I know he's getting better - he fell asleep while we were washing his wounds tonight! Even when we finished and walked off, he just stayed up there sleeping.

Better by the day - he took interest in a straw today (he's usually obsessed with them) and batted it around the floor rather half-heartedly. He lost interest when he couldn't pick it up off the floor in his mouth because of the cone. At that point, he gave me the evils again and then stomped off in high dudgeon.

The cat's recovery continues apace - of course, now that he's no longer moping about, he's driving us nuts trying to get outside. He's not allowed out until the collar comes off and the wounds are very well healed so that's at least a week away, if not longer. In the mean time, craziness ensues!

The cat went back to the vet today for his follow-up appointment. The vet is really happy with the way the wounds are healing and there will be no need for any surgery. The cat will have to keep his bucket on for another week though, which I'm sure wouldn't please him at all but if it helps in the healing process, I'm fine with it!

I knew the cat was feeling better because he was in his customary position when I came home today - staring out of the big window in the computer room. It gives him a panoramic view of anyone coming up the drive and a bit sight of the road.

Similarly, washing him was easier tonight - usually he takes off as fast as he can after we let go of him but tonight he just sat there and shot the evil eye at us.

The cat seems to have relaxed a little about his bucket - he still crashes into my leg when he tries to brush against me and still catches it on corners when he walks too close to them but he's adapted well to it generally. He's eating a little more which is a good sign.

The wound cleansing is still not a pleasant experience for him - that saline must sting like hell - but we've got it down to a very efficient routine so it's almost over before he realises it. He's still sticking close by and he really likes to sit on my lap - he's never really been a lap cat before - but he's more relaxed about that too. He goes back to the vet on Thursday so she can look at how well he's going then.

The cat is back home and looking very sorry for himself - he really doesn't like his bucket and keeps crashing into stuff as he walks around. He's also attached himself to me so anywhere I go, he's right behind me.

Normally, I only existing as a food serving and conveyance device for him but I think he's decided I have some other purpose. Now I'm not sure what that is exactly but he's certainly sticking to me at the moment. I'm surprised at that though - considering we had to wash his wounds with saline solution (there's a second wound just above the base of his tail that the vet decided not to stitch which looks very ugly) and then apply some cream to them to stop the scabbing.

The cat spent last night at the vet's, continuing his recovery but the vet decided to keep it one more night as, to quote the vet, "he has the most amazing ability to twist and contort himself in order to get to his stitches"!

More expense - but the good side is that the vet also said that the cat is doing very well, the wound is clearing up nicely and the infection is responding well to the antibiotics. I think that the cat should be home tomorrow, all going well.

The cat was in a serious fight a couple of nights ago. I went out to rescue him and he did look very beaten up so I checked him over. There was a large ruffled patch on his back which I checked over but no bites were obvious. Yesterday morning he was moping about looking very sorry for himself so I checked him again - clear, still. This morning he was looking way worse and, when I picked him up he hissed at me. I checked him all over this time (as I should have last time) and there, just to the left of his scrotum was a large wound, about two inches long and deep (1/4 inch or so). I had to go to work then but my partner took him over to the vet.

The cat has antibiotics for the infection in the wound, two sets of stitches (one set of internal soluble stitches to pull the wound together and a second external set to close the wound) and a plastic collar around his neck to stop him licking the stitches. He's also spending the night at the vet's to make sure there are no complications, all for the bargain price of $500 dollars!
