Here's a list of the six most terrifying foods in the world. Fortunately I have only eaten one of them. Unfortunately it was #1 - Balut. This was a bit of a local delicacy where we were visiting at the time - Baguio City in the Philippines. The article says that Balut are duck eggs but I'm fairly sure ours were chicken eggs - but maybe that's just the trauma speaking!

I ate it all and kept it down for the three minutes that the bet specified. Of course, that all changed very abruptly at the 3 minutes and ten seconds mark!

Why am I reading this just before going to bed? I guess it could have been worse - I could have read it just before eating! As someone who doesn't eat escargots or calamari (I've had both), these items were way beyond icky to me! ;-)

The list of "lesser evils" I've eaten is a bit longer - snails, frogs' legs, squid, emu, crocodile, goat and snake amongst others. Brawn - boiled pig's brains is a particularly nasty- especially when I remember looking into the pot as a child as my Dad boiled the pig's head!

The only one I am uncomfortable to admit to eating is dog. I ate it once, unwittingly, many years ago. Can't say it was particularly good or bad, just a little strong for me - mind you, it was in a searingly hot curry so that might have masked any bad flavour!
