I was at a conference at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle today. This was the view from the conference room window

This is one of those big container ships leaving the port - the grey edge is the edge of the balcony:

and this is another shot (of the same boat) just to give you an idea of the size of it:

With that view outside, I found it quite hard to concentrate on the speakers!

That's amazing! I wouldn't have been able to concentrate either. :)

It didn't help that most of what I was listening too was really boring too!

That's a great view, [livejournal.com profile] catalyst2. Our Maritime Museum (which is a couple of minutes walk away from where I work) has a lovely view from the front lobby, but the offices are all underground and the meeting room looks out on to a grassy hill. On the other hand, the Museum with whom we share our building has administration offices that look right out on the harbour (as does my boss's office). My window looks out into the park but when the tide is high, I can see smaller boats going into the inner harbour at False Creek.

Earlier this year I attended a meeting at the Aquarium and the room was right over the seal habitat so we could hear them barking for their breakfast in the morning. :D

This museum has, just for once, been designed as much for the internal displays as for the external views. It is, in a stylized kind of a way, built to look like an enormous billowing spinnaker and it's built right in the heart of Fremantle Port so that you actually have to drive past all the wharfs and port buildings to get to the museum.

I Googled it to see. What a beautiful building, [livejournal.com profile] catalyst2! That looks like it should win awards for the architecture. I hope if/when our Maritime Museum ever gets built on the port waterfront as they keep hoping that they will do something like that.

I don't know if you've ever seen pictures of Canada Place that was built during Expo 86, but they did a good job of making it look very nautical. (It's where the cruise ships dock.) http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:pePaGIsM6pQfYM:http://www.vcmbc.com/Images/imax_image2.jpg

Wow, Canada Place also looks very nice. Looks very large too.

Canada Place is large. It's the Trade and Convention Centre as well as having a hotel, with a restaurant at the "prow" on one level, and an IMAX theatre on the top level. It can actually fit two large cruise ships (end to end) on the west side and I think only one on the east.

That is big - the picture gives some idea but not quite on that scale!
