Another gem from Reading The Vampire Slayer, this time from an interview with Steven DeKnight (on p. 118):
"..... so I (SDK) wrote a Buffy spec script called 'Xander the Slayer', where Xander accidentally absorbs Buffy's powers and we find out why men can't be slayers, I'd tell you more but there is a chance that it might end as an episode of the animated show."

Of course, the animated show is no more but I would love to have seen that script produced!

Did SDK get the job on Buffy by writing a Buffy spec? That's really unusual.

I think the spec was for the animated series but then got offered a job on the "live" series on the strength of what he wrote, especially when the animated version never came about.

I Googled the reference to see if I could find out more about this script. Only two links turned up: one to your LJ, and this interview (http://perso.orange.fr/buffysspirit/news/2003/040403deknight.htm), which goes a little into the reasons why men can't be Slayer.
