It is ironic writing this now that Drive is cancelled because my thoughts after this episode were "Now this is going to be a great series because it's really hit its pace now." Sadly we'll never see that now, I guess but here's the review any way
I was glad that this opened with Leigh and Susan rolling into the empty drive-in because I was thinking that they had to deal with that before almost anything else in this episode. That they just got eliminated was a little surprising - I thought you got some kind of penalty, not just elimination but, given later events, perhaps they weren't *really* eliminated, just tested to see what they would do. Remember, the theme is "just how hard are you driven to win?" Anyway, that whole plot was well handled and, although Susan's death was surprising (although, what am I talking about - this is the Timinator, after all!), Leigh response was great. The little scene as the driver who picked Leigh up talks about Appomattox was great. The look in Leigh's eyes as she said "Not this time." was powerful.
The bank robbery surprised me - I didn't think that Alex would fall back into that so easily but I am glad it went wrong because a perfect heist in the middle of all the drama would have been just a little too easy. The planning scene over coffee was funny too and then to see Amy Acker ("haunting" Alex during the heist) was great too. Sadly, I guess that's the last time we're likely to see her in this. That Sean got shot sets up the next episode well - not that that's going to happen now!
I'm glad that Rob finally got to find out that Ellie (see 4th episode and I finally remember her name!) has been stopping the army's attempts to contact him. Majorly pissed, he was! That should be an interesting dynamic to explore in the coming episodes - oh wait, THERE WON'T BE ANY!
Overall, this was a good episode - one character dead and another well on the way - YAY Tim! - and was starting to really explore the dynamics of all the race participants. My theory, not that we'll ever get to explore it, is that wealthy people were betting on the race but were also allowed to interfere to try and get "their" car into a better position by any means that slowed down the other competitors. A race, yes, but with even more hazards in it than usual, almost like an ordeal (not the word I want but I can't think the right word now!)
