If Dick Dastardly could get to the front of the race to set his traps time and again, why didn't he just keep driving and win the race anyway?

There is not winning, and there is Losing.

Which is more appealing to the Dick Dastardly psyche, coming first by a few metres, or sending the other cars off into a chasm so they're absolutely no threat at all?

I must admit this is something that bothered me as a kid - get in, drive, you'll win! But now I see that this makes sense, given the personality type. We also see it with Mandy sometimes, but Mandy is generally more of the winning by not competing type.

The other guy doesn't lose, I beat him.

Hmmmm ..... I get that - it does make sense from that perspective.
