Battle #36
Oct. 6th, 2009 09:44 pmThis was 2000 points vs Willie's Necrons. I had added a couple of extra lascannons into my tactical squads but otherwise took my fairly standard army. He took 40 warriors, 10 Immortals, two monoliths and the Nightbringer. It was pitched battle deployment with annihilation for the mission - exactly the mission I didn't want, of course.
Deployment was fairly standard for both of us.
Turn 1 - his shooting shook both of my Razorbacks but did nothing else of significance whilst I concentrated my fire on his Monoliths with my Predator Annihilator and two tactical squad lascannons - they did precisely nothing. My Ironclad Dread DP'ed down next to one of the Monoliths but failed to do anything to it.
Turn 2 - he moved forward six inches and fired killing a handful of marines here and there but nothing significant. I got my Speeders in range of one squad of warriors and (with the help of a well-placed Whirlwind round) destroyed the squad - bar one. With WBB, every single one got back up! This was to be a common pattern throughout the game. His shooting in the middle did little but, in an effort to divert off the warriors in the centre, I drove the Rhino and both Razorbacks in front of those squads with the hope that I could get the warrior squad on the left and at least halt the Immortals on the right without having to worry too much about getting caught in a cross fire. On the right the Dread was immobilised and one weapon destroyed - the glancing 6's were a real pain in this game.
Turn 3 - he moved the warrior squad from the back left to centre left via the Monolith. They fired and immobilised and took one weapon off the Vindicator. The Monolith hit the Predator and destroyed the sponsons. The Rhino in the centre got destroyed by the Nightbringer whilst the Dread got destroyed by multiple immobilised results. In my turn all four combat squads on the right fired, killed multiple Immortals, getting the squad down to three models at one stage. With WBB, every one, bar one, got back up again. In the centre I had a dilemma - the tactical squad that had bailed out of the destroyed Rhino was going to die next turn - it was just a matter of by what so I had to pick a target for it. A combination of rapid fire bolters, another very accurate Whirlwind round and the Predator killed an entire Warrior squad so no WBB rolls were possible. At this point we both realised that we had taken hours to get to this point and decided that next turn (turn 4) would be the last.
Turn 4 - A combination of rapid fire and the Nightbringer killed off the tactical squad in the centre whilst the Immortals caused a few wounds over on the right but combat squads worked well for once and the four small targets meant that he couldn't destroy anything significant. Retaliatory fire on the Immortals killed all but two again and all but one got back up AGAIN!
Final result - loss by 4KP to 1.
What I learned tonight:
1) The glancing 6 is bloody annoying - every time he fired on a vehicle, he got 4-6 sixes but when he fired on infantry (where it made no difference), he usually got none.
2) WBB is also bloody annoying - I caused a whole pile of casualties time and again, only for almost all of them to get right back up again.
3) It was fun fighting against an army that functions so differently from anything else out there. It was so much fun, in fact, that we both wanted a rematch in two weeks' time but with only 1500 points so that we can get through at least 5 turns this time.
My W-L-D record:
40K: 24-8-0
Apocalypse: 2-0-1
Planetstrike: 0-1-0
