Tonight's game was 1500 points against James's Tyranids. James is a new player to the club but he said he was an experienced 40K player. I never look at opponent's lists - they tell me what they've got and I'll go from there.
Turn 1 - he deploys first, I deploy and I still haven't spotted it. He moves, runs, fleets etc and then it's my turn. I finally realise what's wrong - he has two carnifexes, two three-man warrior squads and and endless tide of gaunts (with no reserves). That's right, just two synapse squads. I drop pod my dread down and a combination of assault cannon and heavy flamer kill off one warrior squad. The other squad gets hit by Thunderfire/Whirlwind combo and is reduced to one. Half of the gaunts on the board now have no synapse creature in range and run back. The rest of my army fires at the 'fexes - one is down to one wound and the other to three.
Turn 2 - the fleeing gaunts can't stop their running because there is no synapse so they continue away. The other half of the gaunts move forward but do no damage. My turn and all I do is kill off the last warrior and hit both 'fexes with all I've got. The first one dies quickly to sniper scouts and the second one is taken out by the humble bolter fire. There is now no synapse on the board at all. Game over (all bar the shouting)!
What I learned tonight:
1) I don't think of myself as particularly good at this game but I really feel like I should have helped this guy. He refused though so he got what was coming to him.
My W-L-D record:
40K: 24-7-0
Apocalypse: 2-0-1
Planetstrike: 0-1-0
