That's never a good noise

catalyst2Just got back from trying to help a friend get her car started. We did all the usual things to no avail. Then I looked down at the engine and thought I could see something dripping. In order to get a better view with the torch, I moved a drive belt about 5mm to the right. As I did so, there was a very loud CLANG! and a large metal thingee towards the bottom of the engine fell off, getting stuck so far down that I couldn't reach it from the top or from underneath.
Now, I will freely admit that I know almost nothing about cars (as if the above description didn't give you a clue of that already!) but I am almost 100% certain that when big pieces of metal fall off the engine, it's not a good sign. Needless to say, I ended up giving my friend as lift home. The car will have to wait until tomorrow.
