Just saw S109 of Dexter and just loved it. It was all kinds of different from previous eps - but that just made it all the better in my eyes.

There was no killing - by Dexter, any way - and there was so much character development that it was just sweet to see. Early in the series, I was worried that it would drop into too much of a formulaic "Dexter disposes of the scum of the week" thing that it would be boring. Boy, was I wrong!

Dexter finds out all kinds of things this week - that his bio-dad is dead which means that Harry lied to him, who Deb's boyfriend is (but not *who he is*), that Rita really is smart, that Rudy creeps him out a bit (I loved the "I get up earlier than normal people", "Coffee?" exchange) and that Deb *really* does care for Dexter, more than Dexter (or even Deb?) realised.

We realised that Rudy killed Dexter's Dad - but not entirely sure why - just to draw Dexter out, maybe? Cause pain to Dexter? Show him who's boss? Also the old lady is the next ITK victim - but I assume he won't do his trademark thing because that would be too much of a coincidence - although that could drop Dexter into it if Doakes got wind of it?

Talking of Doakes, we got a little more backstory on him too - some very, very important stuff if this goes anything like the books! Although some comments on boards suggest that LaGuerta got Doakes off for personal reasons, I think she was being honest when she said she was ordered to drop the case.

And Paul - ugh - come on Dexter, hurry up and *deal* with this ass! But Rita got the first shot in - YAY, Rita! Now let's see how Paul treats you! Probably worse, of course, but then that's all the better for the drama.

This episode added so much in depth and richness that it was just a treasure. I loved all the Deb/Dexter interaction as kids, as also Harry's role in all of this. I loved that Harry realised just how much effort Dexter had put into the card (and what a realization it was on Dexter's that *that* was the normal thing to do) and got it out of the bin. Harry even delivered it for real to Dexter's bio-dad. Seeing Dexter looking at the card at the end was interesting - Harry had lied to him and yet, in a way that could have been so easy to lie about (throw the card away after Dexter gave it to him), he did tell him the truth. Just thinking about it, that also means that Dexter's bio-dad knew his real name and yet never tried to contact him (that we know of!). Perhaps the Code of Harry again?
