If this keeps getting better ....

.... I am going to run out of superlatives. I am going to have to come up with terms like superabuloustastic or incredidondermungous! I am of course referring to S106 of Dexter!
To see Dexter, the ice-cold killing machine all in a flap was just a sight to behold - so very "bunny-in-the-headlights" and a whole different side to him. Best example of that was Doakes, LaGuerta and Deb calling him over to look at the final sketch that the sketch artist (is there a special job title for that?) and the boy had made. His trepidation and hesitancy was just such a contrast to his usual confident stride (or swagger?) And then it is *that* face of all faces? Does Dexter do God's work? Not going to go there, I don't think!
ITK really ramped up the stakes here and tested Dexter to the limit. Now that Dexter has apparently passed that test, what will ITK's next step be? Face-to-face confrontation, maybe or move even closer to Dexter - like the apartment next door and the next table at a restaurant? Whatever it is, ITK certainly seems to be willing to throw caution to the wind in order to get closer to Dexter.
One question did occur to me - how did ITK know where Dexter dumped the body? It is the middle of the ocean so ITK couldn't "hide" just out of sight - or did he already know about Dexter's dumping ground, perhaps? Does he have Dexter bugged or GPS tagged? So many questions, so little time!
Other things I loved about this episode:
- Deb got it right again - the profile was absolutely spot on, so much so that she described Dexter to a T. Unfortunately, she did that to Dexter so he immediately deflected her off - and she got so upset about it! Then all the Deb/Dexter dynamic from adolescence came up. That was such a good insight into both of them.
- The Cody/Astor dynamic over the birthday party - just how much of an echo of the Deb/Dexter dynamic was that? Also loved Dexter's interaction with Cody, both the goldfish "ceremony" and the big "helicopter" at Astor's birthday party. The way he connects to children so easily is such a contrast to the effort he has to make around adults.
- Rita stood up to Paul on her own. She stood her ground, spelled it out to him in no uncertain terms and it worked. It was good to see her do that and then make what was probably a more difficult series of phone calls - to the parents of all the children who weren't going to let their children come to Astor's party. Rita's happiness at the party was not just about Astor having a good time, as important as that was to Rita, but also about the fact that Rita made it happen that way, I suspect. I do still have this lurking feeling that Dexter is going to have to *deal* with Paul at some point.
- Look, LaGuerta's human after all - weeks of being a complete and utter ass and then not only does she bond so well with the boy (sorry, forgot his name!) but there is even the start of a thaw in her relationship with Deb. Of course, Deb had already stormed out so is quite unaware of that but still, enormous shift from LaGuerta.
- Dexter threw away his entire killing kit, except for the slides. How will he put a new kit together again? I also liked the flashback to who his victims were - those slides really are trophies from his victims, not, as I once considered, proof of his "goodness". Like many serial killers, Dexter keeps the trophies so he can re-live the thrill of the kill without having to risk the entire act again. Of course, that thrill wears off again fairly soon so the killing cycle starts again.
- I complained about S103 and the arbitrariness of Dexter's decision making there but it looks like there may be consequences from that in S107, if the "next time on ..." is to be believed. That lessens at least a part of my criticism of S103 - and shows that this team is writing with some long-term awareness (other than the ITK arc, of course) of continuity and consistency. That's certainly a big plus for me because that's absolutely how I like the writing to be done. YAY! Double-YAY, even!
