In an effort to broaden my comic book horizons, I have been raiding the local library and grabbing graphic novels that I wouldn't usually read and this one of two that I grabbed last week.

Bearing in mind that I know little to nothing of Spider-man canon, I read this book with enjoyment. I quite liked the art and story which is essentially that the Ultimate version of the Sinister 6 are captured, escape, demand a pay-off in return for not exposing certain information, raid the White house when their demand is refused and then are beaten down and re-captured in a no-holds barred slugfest in front of the White House.

The story is generally well-paced and some of the highlights are the off-action vignettes - Peter's anxiety about just how pissed Aunt May is going to be having been held in protective custody, Captain America's continual needling of Nick Fury about Fury's role in the origin of all this - which work very well to give a personal and humanizing touch to an otherwise grand and sweeping story. For me, that's what I like - that balance because it is a neither a cardboard cut-out "epic" nor a plodding personality study - it's the best of both of those.

Although reading this is a not a particularly cerebral exercise, the last comments to Nick Fury from Captain America are interesting:

"You know, being a veteran of war .... Being a creation of war .... It occurred to me .... That, really, it's men of influence and power that decide what these wars will be about. They decide who we are going to fight and how we will fight them.... And then they go about planning the fight. In a sense, really, these people of power will the war into existence." Fury just looks pained and then sad. He walks away wordless.

Not a bad way to end the review!
