Terry Pratchett has a form of early onset Alzheimer's disease according to this BBC report. Unfortunately, most forms (but not all, admittedly) of early onset Alzheimer's disease are aggressive and cause more functional loss faster.

Uh, be glad... I'm still caught somewhere between shock, denial and sadness. I mean it's Terry Pratchett! He's like one of the greatest literary minds of our time.

And I guess that's the hard thing - his entire identity, trade, fortune and everything is built around the sophisticated product of that mind!
