I have the most terrible issues writing and indeed have notepads going back as far as 1980 filled with ideas. I can never get past the opening few thousands words or so. When I got stuck a few days ago, I thought that was it, I would grind to a halt like usual. Instead, 3 peripheral characters who were supposed to be in one scene, only to be slaughtered shortly thereafter, sprung to life. They've taken over - but that's good because they all come with a slew of back story (that I didn't even write!)
Until I did nano in 2005, I'd never finished a single story. I had so many partials too. This year's nano will be my 5th novel. Someday maybe I'll even get published.
Wow - I don't even have a single short story finished and I have been trying to do this for 27 years! Drives me nuts, it does - and yet the bits that I do get out make me feel so good, if only until I grind to a halt again. The one thing is that I have never been short of ideas - I've got millions of them!
I'm like you catalyst2, I have hundreds of story ideas, with several novels started - each in a different genre. I don't really like reading short stories - and I don't like writing them - but I have written several in the past year or so, because my scifi geek group that meets on Friday nights have done some writing challenges. Unfortunately, the guy who started the club is a bit obsessive about the challenges so the last couple have not appealed to me at all.
The previous ones seemed to be well-received by the group when I read them - and even Greg Edmondson liked them when I accidentally sent them to him instead of another Greg on my contact list!!
