According to this interview with Jeff Lindsay at CraveOnLine:

" ..... he's already started working on a fourth Dexter book, and the vigilante-serial killer will be his main professional focus for now.

"There's an obligation involved," Lindsay said. "You work your whole life to get to a place like this, and if people want to read them, I'll write them. As long as they like what I'm doing, I'll keep doing it.""

And it sounds like there will be more books coming after the fourth one, from that. Nice interview too - Lindsay seems to be quite relaxed about how much the series deviates away from his original vision.

My DVDs of season 1 finally arrived yesterday. Sadly I won't have time to watch any of it until tomorrow. I can't wait.

Doesn't look like we are getting a DVD release at all - I've checked until the end of December for R4 releases and no Dexter. Damn!

What are the extras on the DVD's btw?

I really liked both of them - but didn't like the final chapter of either - just seemed all a bit hurried and too easy but I love Lindsay's ability to describe Dexter when The Dark Passenger's in control. That's something the TV series has not touched on, although that might be really difficult to do on a visual medium, I suppose.

Interesting. I just watched all of S1 Dexter last weekend and have no idea of the history or the books it is based upon, but I'm glad to see that the story will continue. I wondered how they would keep him going since Dexter seemed to evolve as a person in some dramatic ways in S1. Have you read the books?

I have read both the existing books and have the third on pre-order. The books are a different creature from the TV. Both are enjoyable in their own right but don't expect either to be compatible with the other. Book!Dexter is a lot more emotionally numb and is very fond of alliteration- to almost a distracting degree. The only thing about the books is that both end very abruptly - there is all this exquisite build-up, every bit as good as the TV series and then they just fizzle out, only imo of course.

Did you like it? What did you think of the plot twists. This show blew me away in a major sense. When I saw the pilot it was months before the premiere, and the character sucked me in immediately. I couldn't get him out of my head for a week. While watching the season, I was consistently surprised and amazed by the plot twists, by the detailed character explorations, and impressed by the acting, the design, and the musical score. This show topped everything else that aired that year, including two of my other favorites, Veronica Mars and Battlestar Galactica.

I wondered how they would keep him going since Dexter seemed to evolve as a person in some dramatic ways in S1.

You have no idea. I've seen the first two episodes of the new season, and you have no idea what's to come. I think this season might even top the first, if that's possible. Look for the first two eps, they're floating around.

I really did like it! I love how unconventional and atypical the relationships are (his relationship with Rita, his sister, etc.) Each character is explored so deeply and it is astonishing how they are able to accomplish that in a one hour show.

Dexters character seemed to evolve A LOT in the first season. With sex, relationship with Rita, the things he said to that psychiatrist, etc. It made me think he was on his way to not being able to kill anymore. I bet that after the traumatic experience of the last ep it might have regressed him a bit though.

There are some plot lines that didn't really seem necessary to me but I imagine those will all serve a purpose at some point. Mainly the ep where Angel is confused about his partner's chasing that guy under the bridge. It seemed to sort of stop.

Thanks, though! I can't wait for the next season to start!

It made me think he was on his way to not being able to kill anymore.

I thought they were going to have him begin a path of healing too, but if he didn't kill anymore there would be no show, so that's never going to happen.

I still root for him though, to get therapy and work out the issues, but it's probably way too late for that. That stuff should have begun in childhood. Stupid Harry.

Glad you liked it!

I suspect that some of those story lines that didn't go anywhere were setups for S2. The bridge one is, I am almost certain, going to pay off in S2, What was confusing for me was that that looked like one of the story lines from the second book so I thought that S2 might go that way but from a number of interviews, S2 is not going to resemble the second book at all.

This is complete and utter speculation on my behalf but all I could think was that Dexter could somehow become aware of Doakes' killing of suspects in questionable circumstances (to say the least!) and use that to somehow get Doakes off his back? It is mentioned in one of Dexter's VO's, in the first epsiode (I think?) of S1 that Doakes has a record of killing suspects. Just a guess, though!

I'll just add my vote to esg's - I've also seen the first 2 eps of of S2 and it hasn't lost anything in the new season. I am endlessly impressed by the show writers to keep their creativity going so well.

Ok, that's weird. Is it my imagination or is the name of that journalist the same as Michael C. Hall's character in Six Feet Under? I'm too tired and not sure if I'm reading it right.

It's close - journalist=David Fischer, Michael C. Hall=David Fisher.

Yeah, I caught the different spelling, but still. Same name. That made me do a double take.
