Spike: Asylum TPB
Aug. 1st, 2007 06:41 pmI wasn't really too sure how this one was going to go because I didn't really know the writer or artist. However, this team really came up with a great tale.
Many of the first Jossverse TPB's that IDW came up with were pretty ordinary to be honest, both story and art-wise, so I was especially relieved to see that the story worked well here - better than well because Brian Lynch got Spike absolutely pitch-perfect. So often Spike is portrayed as a brainless brawler but Lynch got the arrogance and the passion and the "strut" just right here.
The art was good too - no attempt at a photo-likeness here but Franco Urru got Spike's shape and posture very well, in addition to drawing so many other original characters so well - Betta George, Wiseau, Mah-Zinh, Saje and so many others.
Special moments there were aplenty but I have to say that Lorne singing the Ballad of Serenity topped it all off for me!
There was a good covers gallery and Lynch's commentary at the end is just a sweetener to top it all off.
