catalyst2Seeing Skin and Bone just saddens me for what we lost when The Inside was cancelled - and it will never be released on DVD, either, according to Tim Minear! The writing in this episode is just so sharp - it is Jane Espenson after all - and she really cuts lose on this one. In fact, this is the episode to show people who say that Jane only writes funny episodes well - she can do dark and scary too!
William Mapother is just awesome (and I don't use that word lightly, either) as the repulsive Ronald Ewing - a 700 pound psychotic cannibal - who preys on vulnerable women via chat rooms. It would be quite conventional were it not for the fact that chat rooms are specifically for anorexia survivors and Ronald has converted his entire house into a huge wheelchair accessible dungeon.
If that wasn't amazing enough, we learn more about Rebecca in this episode than in almost any other. Rebecca is caught by Ronald and yet he's in far more danger than she ever is because Rebecca discovers her strength again - it's like she can only feel emotions when she is in captivity. There's a moment when she is sitting on the floor of the cell and she looks up - every ounce of anger and power and determination she has is in the look. The second I saw that, I knew Ronald was in biiiiiiiiiig trouble!
The double genius in this episode is in the contrast between the revitalisation of Rebecca and what the team find in her apartment. There is a total lack of personality in there - in fact she hasn't even unpacked anything 6 months after she has arrived. It is like she only has a personality when under conditions of adversity.
And in just the perfect denouement, the entire team (Paul first then Danny, Mel and Carter and finally Web) turns up to her apartment with a house-warming gift. She smiles probably the first big relaxed smile she has done all series, and Web gives her the most warming paternal look you can imagine. I almost warm towards the guy but, if there had been another episode, he would probably have dropped her straight back into it!
Just genius and this all we'll ever get of it.
