Having seen 28 Days Later on TV, wasn't sure quite sure how 28 Weeks Later would go on the big screen. I needn't have worried.
First check of the watch - aaaaaaaaaaah, get away from me, you might be one of the infected ....... oh wait, it wasn't real?
Holy Crap! HOLY CRAP! HOLY CRAP! This movie's ability to sustain tension was just unbelievable. From the opening "idyllic" scene which got me on so many levels to the "kiss" scene (and you'll know which one I mean when you see it) to the bunker break-in to the bunker break-out and then the subsequent "duck shoot", this movie just never let up.
The only downers were a couple of rather obviously plot devices which were fairly unlikely (Don's ability to appear every time Tammy and Andy tried to rest, Tammy and Andy's initial break-out and Don's "Access All Areas" pass all stand out) but the overall pace of the film didn't let these distract too much.
The good? Well apart from the afore-mentioned continuous tension, which was so very very well done, I was impressed by the acting ability of the two child leads who were able to keep that balance being "movie" children and "real" children really quite skilfully. The other highlight was the "chopper" scene - I'll never quite look at a helicopter in the same light after that!
In short a great film that I enjoyed immensely - so good, in fact that I was able to ignore the fuckwit next to me who was sending so many text messages that I suspect he was texting the dialogue of the entire movie to a friend!
And how good was that set-up for 28 Months Later (or whatever #3 is going to be called)?
