I'm amazed it is so cheap - some of the other boxsets from cable channels (like Carnivale from HBO) are so expensive. Let's hope that's because they are expecting it to sell millions - and it should, it is good enough!
I suspect it's because Showtime doesn't get the kind of ratings HBO does. When I estimated how much Dexter might cost, I looked at the price of other hour-long Showtime dramas, like "The L Word", which runs about $40 on sale at Amazon. I'm quite delighted that it's much cheaper.
Does HBO get lower or higher ratings than Showtime? I am always confused by pricing on DVD box sets because, in any other field, if you are expecting to sell higher large numbers, you can typically lower the unit price and yet HBO have very expensive box sets for programmes that don't get good numbers of viewers and, presumably, correspondingly low numbers of box sets sold (though of course there are some spectacular exceptions there *cough*Firefly*cough*). I was expecting Showtime's price to be around HBO's. Either way, thank goodness for the low price!
I think HBO gets better ratings. HBO is highly regarded as a superior cable network, and Showtime has struggled over the years with their quality of original programming. They really got it right with Dexter and also Weeds.
I watched the first two episodes of Weeds and just couldn't get it, in any way, shape or form but it certainly seems to get a lot of positive comments.
