I liked this movie - humour, character, twists and turns all added to a good overall impact.

First check of the watch - never, too busy laughing!

To watch both Gerard Depardieu and Jean Reno in this is to watch two master craftsmen at work. Reno does the intense straight man perfectly - tightly wound and on edge but never OTT - while Depardeiu's bumbling oaf is just pathetic enough to annoy without irritating us. The two together are just exquisite, bouncing off each other in a crescendo of catastrophe.

In the end, the plot was a little obvious but the skill of the two leads could carry almost anything, I suspect. In the end too, both characters were changed - Ruby relaxed, just a little at any rate, and Quentin became a little more aware. Was the world changed? No. Was High Art created? No. Was I amused? Yes. Was I moved by the story? Yes, to a surprising degree, even.
