I just happened to catch the opening credits for Stargate Atlantis last night and who should I see but Jewel Staite. It turns this was S2e7 Instinct. No spoilers but Jewel did a very good job - and sure as hell was hard to recognize under all those prosthetics. In fact it wasn't until a close-up where she smiled very broadly that I could recognise her.

I can't say I have ever watched a full episode of Stargate Atlantis but it seemed quite good. The Sheppard/McKay/Weir interaction seemed quite dynamic and fun with lots of potential but I have to say that the big guy with the sword (Ronin?) was written as a bit cliched although his acting was OK.

How can you casually throw in the line "When I was talking to her in the fall ..." and not give more details? Spill them all, please? Was she buying zucchini in the supermarket? Going through the Taco Bell drive-through?

Neither of the above although one of my friends did run into her in the local supermarket before we met her.

The short version is we were at a comedy show which was co-founded by Jewel's husband, Matt Anderson. Our local Browncoat group has gone several times and Jewel is usually there (she lives in Vancouver and her mother is a member of our group). This time she had invited us to go opening night and about a dozen of us did.

I talked to her mother at intermission and then after the show, I ran into Jewel in the washroom and she recognised me and we had a brief conversation. The news about her possible role in Atlantis had just come up on Whedonesque so I asked her about it (since it's filmed in Vancouver as well).

I also got a hug from Matt who recognised me and gorramit from going to previous shows. (The audience size runs from about 100-200 people in small theatres and the actors are usually quite close.)

Jewel was also our special guest at the prescreening we had in Vancouver - naturally - and our group presented her with autographed (by us!) Firefly DVDs as someone had borrowed hers and not returned them! I was the person who organised the tickets for Jewel's family and friends.

Okay, so it wasn't that short - but it could have been much longer! :D

So cool an encounter! I guess that being so far away from any type of contact with actors in the 'verse, I always have these images of these remote aloof figures wafting into places, bestowing their magnificence upon us and then drifting out equally elegantly. Meeting people in the washroom and having a natural conversation (and being recognised!EXCL!) is just so very cool.
