The last Australian-made movie I went to see (Gabriel) was just awful so I approached this movie with some trepidation - having seen it, I have no I idea why I was so "trepped" out because this was well done.

The look was right for all the characters and two actors in particular did a great job of their parts - Caitlin Stasey (as Ellie Linton) and Deniz Akdeniz (as Homer Yannos) - just as well given that they are the two leads! The movie ran much as I thought it might from the book - Hell was suitably idyllic, Wirrawee looks suitably both idyllic (before) and devastated (after, though how cars are still burning a week after the invasion is beyond me) and the action is well done. In a break with the way many movies like this are made these days, there is little of the spectacle of the war and a lot about the grind and horror of war.

Given that this is the first in a series of three movies, this is a damn good start.
