... through an hour of Smallvile's S5e1 "Arrival" for just FIVE FREAKING SECONDS of James Marsters. I feel like I need to douse my eyeballs in bleach - not even for JM was that dreck worth watching!

And I just realised that that means I have to watch this thing again if I want to see more of JM.

I am on the edge, I'm telling you!

I only saw bits and pieces of season five. The whole show is like what you described. Some of the characters have so much potential (Lex) yet they focus on the ones that have no potential at all except to be extremely annoying (Lana). I've decided that Michael Rosenbaum needs his own spin off show, but with new and better writers so it won't fall apart and end up being all about Lana even though she wouldn't even be in it.

I thought episode 5.05 was funny. It's about vampires and It's pretty campy. It's written by Stephen DeKnight, although I don't think his episodes make the show any better.

Even though this is the first episode that I have ever forced myself been able to sit all the way through, I have watched patches here and there and Michael Rosenbaum is a giant amongst acting midgets on that show!

I know you are a great advocate for Kristen Bell as Fray but what about Michael Rosenbaum as Icarus? I also think the guy who is Lex's dad - John Glover? - is good too but the writing for his part tens to be very repetitive. I fully expect either a "MWAHAHA!Mine is an evil plan!" or a "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" (shakes fist in air and falls to knees) from him any moment now.

I'm trying to remember who Icarus is. Is that Fray's "watcher"? I don't know. He'd be in heavy prosthetics. I guess I'd have to read Fray again and picture Rosenbaum in the role.

I watched the first four seasons of Smallville, hoping that Lex would get a bigger arc. Everytime it looked like they were giving something meatier, they pulled it back and focused on more kryptonite freaks of the week. I got tired of waiting.

I like John Glover too. I liked the episodes that focused on the Luthor family. Not enough to keep me watching. I gave up when I heard that season 5 was bad too. It's a shame because it's a good premise with tons of potential, it's just in the hands of the wrong people.

Icarus is the (almost) Big Bad. He is Harth's lieutenant - bald, arrogant and *mean* - with a fair touch of snark. Remember the "Your little finger. Bite it off or face me!" scene? I could just see Rosenbaum doing that one, with all the menace and venom that Icarus would muster.

Oh, right. Yeah, I could see him in that role.

Not that I want to hijack your Smallville thread, but who do you think should play Fray's brother? Who would you cast in the other roles? You know who might be good casting for the "watcher"? Michael Chiklis from The Shield.

Chiklis as Urkonn? I could see that. Even though the film was panned, I thought Chiklis was great as The Thing in F4.

Hahahahaha - before I edited that, I wrote "The Thong! - I'm blind, I'm blind!

Now this may not make sense on first reading but just pause on it - David Spade as Harth? See, I've always seen him as quite whiny and petulant and he's a fairly skinny runt too - plus the whole "destroy the world" thing but even that I see more as him throwing a tantrum than anything else.

How about Jeffrey Donovan as Gunther?

Remind me, who is Gunther again?

I can't see David Spade as Harth. Can he do dark and angry? I'll think about it and see who I can come up with.

Gunther is the fish guy - Fray's boss, I guess - who lives in the tank. See, I ma not sure that Harth is that dark and angry - I see him more as a petulant brat who never grew up, who really wants to make Fray (and Erin) suffer for what they "let" happen to him. If you get a chance to re-read Fray, imagine some of Harth's dialogue as a bit whiny and he looks really different as a character.

Spade does have a limited range though - I just watched "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" and it really is Spade with a one-note schtick. I really struggle to think of someone else, though.

Oh right. The fish guy. Now, who is Jeffrey Donovan? I looked him up and I don't think I've seen him in anything except The Pretender, but I don't remember him in it. He does have the face for Gunther.

You know who keeps popping into my head for Harth? Devon Graye, who plays teenage Dexter. That kid is so good. I think he could play the role smashingly. He's 19, so maybe it would take a few years. Fray and Harth are the same age so he can't look younger than Kristin Bell. Hm. That might be the only problem.

But watch for that guy. He could be a star.

Wait, how long was Harth dead before they met up? Fray would look a little older than her brother since vampires don't age.

Jeffrey Donovan was in Touching Evil" (US version) and boy, can he do dark and menacing, even though he was a (sort of) good cop on the show.

I am not sure why but the number "4 years" comes up for me when I think of the time that has elapsed, making Harth about 15-16 and Fray 19-20. Unfortunately I have no idea why that number comes up!
