Up at 4am today - having not done shift work for 7 years, it's a long time since I was awake and working at 5 am. I had forgotten the funny adjustment that my body goes through as the sky gets lighter and my head wrestles with the fact that this is morning, not evening.
Highlight of the morning was the very well-dressed and unbearably cheerful woman who came over to the stand at about 5.45am and asked for a sausage sizzle medium-rare. Desperately trying to keep my face straight, I said to her "I'm sorry lady, but they are cooked, just cooked" at which her face scrunched up in a little moue. Her reply: "I guess that will just have to do then!"
Seriously, IT'S A SAUSAGE, a tube of unmentionable assorted animal bits (if you're lucky) plus the best quality sawdust and miscellaneous floor sweepings, not a gourmet steak at a fine restaurant.
We had to wait until she was out of earshot before collapsing in giggles.
