Yeah, yeah, another miniseries - move along. Anyway, I am not at all familiar with any of Le Guin's Earthsea books so approached this no knowledge of the story. I do think that two of Le Guin's other books (The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness) are great books full of insight and wit which explore complex ideas with a great deal of imagination and skill.

Jane Espenson's blog had a great entry today on writing about loss of dignity, a subject dear to my heart as I am so good at it (losing my dignity, that is, not writing about it!).

These lines sum it up perfectly, I think:

"The kind of humor I've been talking about is just a few degrees skewed from poignancy, a point well understood by anyone who's ever had the misfortune to get very angry while wearing a chipmunk costume. It's funny if you're not the chipmunk, it's terrible if you are."
