Forget cricket, forget baseball ...
Dec. 2nd, 2006 09:42 pm... I bring you the sport of the 21st Century - PEACHball! YAY! Whuh?
I went to the local fruit and vegetable shop today. For reasons I don't quite understand (but I think the truck which was bringing the shipment across from the East broke down or something like that), they had massive wooden crates of peaches outside the store going for $1 per kg (usually around $8-10 at the moment). The peaches were way beyond eating so they had set up a massive wire cage (like the cricket nets or a baseball batting cage) and lined it with plastic sheeting. You went inside, covered with as much (or as little) protective gear as you wanted and whacked the peaches with a cricket bat as they were thrown to you. Much hilarity was had by all. Fun - but the dollar you paid was also going to a children's charity so some good even came out of it.
I learned several lessons:
1. When bowling a rotten peach, don't try to bounce it in front of the batsmen (like cricket), just pitch it like in baseball.
2. The stones in the middle of peaches really hurt!
3. The smell of rotten peaches hangs around for a long time after you get rid of the chunks.
Still, a tremendous amount of fun and the bruises on my left shoulder should be gone soon!
