Burn Notice 2 - Identity
Jul. 16th, 2007 11:11 pmThis felt quite different from the pilot but that was OK because it was doing something quite different too.
This episode showed another side to Michael Weston - the one that avoided the snark with Madeline's friend (forgotten her name) because he could see the pain, both emotional and physical, she was in. It also showed his ruthless side - when the job needs to be done, he gets the job done. It also showed just how quick he is, thinking on his feet so many times and keeping his cover intact.
Gabrielle Anwar also improved out of sight this time - well acted, the accent got some stability, except when she was deliberately manipulating it and her neediness was well mixed with a healthy dose of aggression. Fiona's obvious glee at getting to hit Sam not once but twice was a sight to behold.
The slightly darker feel to the episode was a welcome variation on the pilot's very "light" feel - that variation will help in the long-run, I feel. The "burn notice" part of the plot is going well too - it is a constant background theme but the main events are so interesting that I barely even focus on that. Even if they take absolutely ages to get anywhere on that plot, I don't think I will be worried.
The potentially annoying captions have been reduced to only the new characters so that hasn't become the thing that I thought it might have. I'm still happy with the VO too - it is still walking that fine line between too obvious and too introspective with a lot of skill.
Overall a good episode that has kept the quality up whilst changing the feel - always a sign that writers and directors are already feeling comfortable with the cast and crew.
