Always a mixed day for this family:

The happy: it's my son's birthday so we went for lunch at the Hog's Breath cafe and it was, as always, very nice, not to mention fairly cheap.

The sombre: afterwards, we walked down to the Mandurah War Memorial and I said my words for the dead. I talked to my children about what it was we remembered today but how do you explain those kinds of lives to people whose toughest experience to date is waiting an extra 5 minutes in the queue because MacDonald's is busy? I try, any way.

Hey Cat...so is the memorial all built now? I haven't been in Mandurah in like over a year!! I must get back there sometime this year (I hope) ok...maybe next year. We'll definaitely be hanging out!!! I think movies, dinner and drinking will be the order of the day!

The memorial finally got built year before last after most of a decade of squabbling and in-fighting. The local RSL seemed to hate it as it was being built (and threatened to boycott ANZAC Day marches etc) but common sense prevailed in the end. It's not badly designed and it works quite well - I like it particularly because there's no big macho statue at the centre. It really does feel like a memorial to the dead - not a glorification of war.

And, in other news, hurry up and get back will you? So many good movies to see, so little time!
