La Revue de Film #15 - Asterix et Obelix contre Cesar
I stumbled across this little gem last night and watched it with great amusement.
First check of the watch - NEVER - I was too fascinated by the whole thing to look away!
Having not read Asterix for a very, very long time (maybe 25 - 30 years?), I had forgotten what a fun (and yet slightly subversive) thing this was. This movie captured just that - Depardieu as Obelix is the gem but Christian Calvier as Asterix and Benigni as Lucius Detritus are great too. Despite comments around that this was not a good adaptation, I thought it was great - just what I imagined the books would be like if they came to life. There are the occasional lame bits - takes a while to get going and some of the SFX are ordinary - but this hits the mark so often that I could forgive it for that. This was the subtitled version with all the original voices so I don't understand all the invective hurled at Laetitia Casta (as Falbala) because she sounded fine to me.
Fun movie, not so much for kids, but more for adults who remember Asterix from their own childhoods.
