Movie Review #5 - The School of Rock
I'm going to start with my usual disclaimer to many of the movies I see - "I don't like _____ but ..." and this is no exception. I don't like Jack Black at all.
First check of the watch - not at all because I was having too much fun!
What makes this work is that Jack Black gets to cut loose here, much in the same way that John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd went for it in "The Blues Brothers". The story is ordinary - an unemployed musician, stuck in a 70's and 80's heavy metal time-warp, fakes his way into a job in a school and "uses" the children to win a rock competition.
That sounds lame, and it could have been, but for the sheer unbridled enthusiasm that everyone but Black above all, brings to the movie. It just a spectacle to behold, Jack Black in full flight in the only vehicle of his that I have seen where that works. I constantly expected him to launch into Tenacious D mode but it was not to be.
There's no real lesson to be learned, no deep moral - but did I like this movie? Hell, yeah!

The icons are cool - but not of my doing - they are the Buffy Park Theme icons that were linked to on Whedonesque a while ago.
