Torchwood - They Keep Killing Suzie

Each of the last few episodes, we have got to explore a little more about each character in the team and this week is no exception - only this week it's Suzie, who is dead - but wait, it isn't via flashback or dreary VO. No it's

a challenging insight into Suzie who really was brilliant at what she did, only she got swallowed up in it. The entire plot was an elaborate safety device for Suzie to force the team back to bring her back, should she ever die. And sure enough, the plan works seamlessly except Jack really is ruthless enough to kill her just one more time. Of course, the question did occur to me - what if they hadn't got someone who could use the Glove of Myneghon Resurrection Glove as well as Gwen did? Suzie's brilliant plot would have fallen into a large hole then, regardless of its brilliance.

That aside, I really liked this episode - sharp, witty and reasonably complex. I also like episodes that draw on the continuity of the series (and yes, given that I generally dislike flashbacks, I am often conflicted over this issue) and this did that well. Ianto also got some good lines and some heavy flirting with Jack (whose reminisces about some very flexible gymnasts was funny) and both Owen and Tosh had good moments, Tosh with her inability to even look at Suzie was especialy interesting. It was fitting that she got to destroy the glove I think. Ianto's throwaway line about gloves coming in pairs seemed ominous as did the the "thing moving out there in the dark" that appears to be coming for Jack - setting up for S2 perhaps?

Oh, here's your review. I'm behind on my f-list so I thought I'd missed this.

What did you think of Detective Swanson? I love her chemistry with Capt. Jack. I hope they bring her back.

I loved this episode. Very spooky. I liked the scene with Gwen and Suzie in the car. Very bleak and haunting.

Just wait until episode 10! It's also one of my favorites...and then, episode 11! The best Torchwood episode EVER!

Yes, I liked Swanson, especially her joy at hearing that Jack was trapped in The Hub - when that shot pulled out to show almost the entire station laughing at Jack's predicament, I thought that was a great moment. If she came back, I'd like to see her character expand a little - too much of the snark grates on me after a while.

Overall though, I really liked this episode - in fact I was quite sorry to see Suzie die. Obviously she had to for the purposes of the story but I would like to have seen more of Suzie. I thought the whole getting-better-by-sucking-the-life-out-of-Gwen was creepy and, when the team worked out that the whole thing was deliberate and planned months, if not years in advance, I thought that was a wonderful twist. I got the feeling that, even though I would really like to have seen more of Suzie, I wouldn't really like her as a person.
