Torchwood: Day One

Second episode of a series is always the test for me. The first episode can always make excuses about "the need for exposition" etc (which I thought Everything Changes did fairly well, btw) but the second episode has got to deliver something more - and Day One certainly did that

this felt strange somehow. Some of the things that worked well last week were curiously absent and there some .... umm ... inconsistencies in the plot.

1. It is a gaseous alien (in its natural state) and you put it into a cell WITH HOLES IN THE WALL? Hello, Deathwish!

2. No-one wears any kind of protective equipment when investigating a meteor that crashed to Earth just minutes (Hours?) ago. What are you all, FIREPROOF?

3. Why did the alien go all the way (sorry, unintentional pun!) to Central Cardiff? Why not "posses" Gwen or Toshiko there and then at the crash site? I mean, how many dozens of guys were all around them?

4. Did Eve Myles just forget to act this week? Because she was just awful for most of this - flat, mis-timed, just baaaaaaaaaad!

5. If the alien gets off on orgasmic energy, why not just possess the guys - why is it always the women who become the Evil Bitch Monster of Death?

6. Jack, you were just trying to argue that Gwen is a fully-fledged and competent part of your team but did you then really have to lead her to the crash site by the hand like she was a little girl?

That all said, I liked most of the ideas for this episode. Gwen's first day and she tries just a little too hard to fit in. She tries to get into the repartee of the team and doesn't quite get it. That was good.

She screws up on the first day because she tries something that the other team members try and it goes wrong with bad (read murderous) consequences. That was good.

Gwen gets the team on track because she humanizes the victim. The team are all so tied up on the technology and the data that they forget the human touch. Gwen does at least carry out that part of her role well, given that that's what Jack brought her in for. I like the theme of the team failing at what they do because they are distanced from ordinary human concerns because of their excessive specializations. Interestingly, I wonder if Ianto is jealous of Gwen (or will they become allies on this score?) because this seems to be the role that Ianto may have played prior to Gwen's arrival.

The "rat splat" was completely unnecessary but fun - because exploding rodents? ALWAYS FUNNY (unless you are the rodent - but given that it may just have died due to an excessive accumulation of orgasmic energy, perhaps that's not so bad a way to go)!

The sex scenes were suitably menacing - the alien's frantic need always over-ran any kind of titillation factor - and so it should. It's just travelled across galaxies and it's going to slow down for foreplay?

The Sperm Donor clinic scenes were good (and just as an aside, how come Owen knew so much about that place?) - and the various piles o'dust were all strategically placed in convenient view.

Actually, I just realised that if this alien's housework had been just a little bit tidier, it could have gotten away with this whole spree!

Overall, I enjoyed this but it did misfire a little for me. People watching the episode with me - 5/6 commented on Gwen's bad acting, 4/6 said the music was much better than last week's (can't say I noticed it either way, either week) and 6/6 said the sex scenes were not gratuitous (given the nature of the alien) but were very disappointed that we didn't see as much of Owen's "sex scene" as we did of Gwen's kisses (all 6 were female, btw ;-)!).

Yeah, the episode has it's holes, and it's not the best writing ever, but OMG Jack is freaking amazing! I'm just mesmerized by him. My favorite line in it, the one that made me fall in love with him, was "You people and your quaint little categories" in response to Owen remarking on Gwen making out with the female alien when she has a boyfriend. I heard that and I just melted.

It's just travelled across galaxies and it's going to slow down for foreplay?

Ha! I also wondered why Jack was immune to the alien's pheromones, but he probably knows how to control his sex drive, being the time-hopping sex captain that he is.

All I know is, the show does get better, and yes, the second half of the season is pretty damn awesome. Just wait.

My first thought was that perhaps Jack is not entirely human?

I had forgotten that line (the "categories" one) but yes, I did smile at that one.

Jack certainly has charisma doesn't he? There is (and he probably gets the comment ad nauseam) a rogue-ish charm about Barrowman that just radiates very time he's on screen. The scene where they are eating Chinese food at the table was interesting. Even though Jack had very few lines, I found myself watching him rather than the character speaking. Even when he rebukes Gwen for assuming that they are doing nothing whilst eating lunch, he turns what could be a vicious put-down into a gentle re-direction of her energy.

I really see what you mean about the programme not always being 100% on the mark but Captain Jack Harkness is always memerizing!

It's killing me to wait a week for every new review from you. I want to know what you think of eps 10 and 12 NOW! Hee hee. You've got patience that I don't.

I must admit I have been sorely tempted to dl the lot and watch them - but having coerced four friends to watch it at our house with me (two extras came over last night - my partner's home hairdresser who was there to work (and her sister) and they both ended up really enjoying the episode!) but I feel a little bit disingenuous doing that and then watching the episodes on the sly. I am dl'ing the episodes the day after they air though, so I can re-watch them.

Hee hee. Yes, yes, my job is done. :)

Yep - I got all of The Inside from you too. I have just watched episode 10 - how that series got cancelled is beyond me. In 10 episodes I have seen more character development and drama than in 237 episodes of CS: Nc:SV:&O clones!

You have the hots for Captain Jack Harkness, just admit it. ;)

[identity profile] catalyst2.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
If anyone could persuade me to play for the other team, it would be Captain Jack ... and Dean Winchester .... and Helo .... and Spike ............

[identity profile] electrcspacegrl.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Those are good choices.

[identity profile] catalyst2.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed!

[identity profile] electrcspacegrl.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm. Dark Wesley.... Well, aside from Spike (for some reason, just not my type) we have the same taste in men.

LOL

[identity profile] catalyst2.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
And that's not something I ever expected to hear!

[identity profile] electrcspacegrl.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I sent you an email. Did you not get it?

[identity profile] catalyst2.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet, I am at - .... shhhhhhhhhh, tell no-one - *work*!

I think you've summed up the episode rather well. Though as for not possessing Tosh or Gwen I think it's because the alien first off wanted to get as far away from her 'prison' as possible and chose to ignore the potential victims close by.

And watching it again just now, it would appear that they all had their "gas masks" on before it got to them although, if it had moved fast enough, it probably could have got to them.
