Movie Review: Battle: Los Angeles

Just got home from watching this movie

It certainly was action-packed - and much of it fairly gritty "unsteady cam" type of swirling blurry images that seem all the rage these days. It worked for this film during the action scenes, I felt, as it added to the sense of bewilderment and confusion that the characters on screen were feeling. During the quiet moments and personal scenes, though, it was just bloody annoying.

The action scenes themselves followed a really common pattern in SF invasion movies - for the first half, the aliens are near-invincible, high-speed tactical geniuses who can't miss a shot. In the second half, once the secret of their "weakness" was discovered, the aliens are stumbling, bumbling idiots who have got a clue in combat.

The movie really slipped, though, once they weren't in combat. With the solitary exception of Aaron Eckhart, no-one's character was the least bit interesting nor showed any development.

Overall, close but no dice!
