I really enjoyed that

Just finished watching The Wire S2. I love the way every body of power, be it police, union, street gang, FBI is riddled with ineptness, usually driven from greed, fear and incompetence. When something does go right, it is more likely to be from luck than anything else. Equally, I like that it is the minions and serfs, the doers and the workers who get stuff done and also suffer for it whilst the bigwigs put in nothing and walk away with everything. So many twists and turns, so many missed opportunities and such damn good drama. Even better is that it looks like ABC2 are just going to keep plowing on straight into S3 next week. WOOHOO!

I just watched the entire series recently. It's really fantastic story writing. I didn't think the police were inept, at least not usually. A lot of them are pretty damn good at what they do. They just had to deal with insane bureaucracy and ego of their superiors getting in the way of them being able to do the work.

I think the individuals were quite competent at times but the overall effect of the department as a whole was inept. Similarly, in the other "bodies of power", whilst there were competent individuals, the overall effect was in inept. I like the way D asked one day in The Pit why all the dealers couldn't just stop killing - if everybody did that, everybody would be better off. Instead, one individual wants even more and acts on that impulse - not only does that individual not gain but collectively everyone else is also worse off too.
