Movie Review #14 - RV: Runaway Vacation
I started to watch this movie with a bit of dread in my heart - I really like Robin Williams and I hate to see a movie star I like crap out. The reviews certainly said lots of bad things about it, particularly about Williams' performance. To my surprise I liked this.
First check of the watch - NEVER. In fact, I watched the movie twice in a row!
I like Williams at his motormouth best and when he does visual gags - and he does them aplenty on both. His street rap in defence of his son is a very funny moment as is his numerous close encounters with the windscreen of the RV towards the end of the movie. The plot isn't anything fancy and the the racoon scene is obviously derivative of National Lampoon's Vacation but this is, after all primarily a vehicle for Williams' talents. Having said that, the supporting cast do contribute, particularly Cheryl Hines as Willliams' long-suffering wife and Jeff Daniels and Kristen Chenoweth as the RV-couple from Hell, Strangely enough, most of the scenes highlighted in the trailers that I saw weren't the highlights of the movie anyway! Pleasantly surprised and highly amused was the result for me.
