I just found this out a couple of weeks ago. It's been a long time since I saw the movie and didn't know any of the stars, but now I'm looking and seeing John Malkovich - and Ben Stiller!!! - as well as Christian Bale. Wow! I have to say I was impressed with the young boy.

I love JG Ballard's writing and, given that Empire of the Sun is autobiographical, I can see where the chaotic but not quite apocalyptic slant comes from in his writing.
