Movie Review #47 - Resident Evil:Extinction

The third part of trilogies like this can go one of two ways - an utter disaster because it was really a two-part story but they wrote a third to make some more money or it can be a rip-roaring finale to farewell the series. Fortunately, this movie is one of the latter. It's not sophisticated or complex - but how complicated and sophisticated can zombie killing get?

First check of the watch - wait, wait, I want to see the next zombie get splattered - and the next one - and the next one - and .....

If this really is the last installment of this series (there are persistent rumours of a fourth movie called RE:Afterlife set in Japan) then this did exactly what it was supposed to. Milla Jovovich well and truly kicked ass, almost everyone else died and the day was saved (along with a chopper full of kids - YAY!).

The opening was really a Mad Max meets The Birds and you know what? It worked, every damn bit of it. The final moments of the flock as Alice did the whole burning sky thing was great. That Alice is getting more powers seemed like a natural progression to me - but I know a lot of people didn't like the whole psycho-kinesis thing. Ali Larter played a great part as the tormented Claire Redfield.

The whole battle scene in Vegas was good even though I did start to wonder just how many zombies they had managed to pack into that container! I liked the whole satellite thing and particularly how she overcame it. To watch the Umbrella Corp techs trying to work out where she was, only for Alice to burst right into their tent was very well done.

I liked the way they got into the base - the look on Alice's face as she saw the trench of Failure!Alice's was great. I know Milla Jovovich gets accused of being a bit wooden at times but I thought she did well here and indeed all the way through the movie. The duel with Dr. Isaacs was a bit OTT but it was the grand climax of the trilogy so I suppose it had to be fairly spectacular. Slice and dice!

The final moments as the mass of Clone!Alice's stared to respond to her presence was a great way to finish - and if there is a fourth part, it could be in Alaska (where the kids were aiming for) or Japan as is rumoured.
