Five years of regret

This is how they promoted Firefly? Holy crap, it's a miracle that even one person tuned into watch that story with the "six-shooting spaceman ... pilot savant ... tough guy named Jayne ... cosmic hooker ... girl in a box"! Later "Out there? Oh, it's out there!" Just shoot me now!

The promo did nothing for me. I was a huge Joss fan, but I never let myself get invested with Firefly while it was on the networks, mostly because it was Fox. I knew they'd kill it, and I didn't want to fall in love. That didn't happen until later when I got to watch the DVDs in proper order...

If that had been my first exposure to Firefly, I think I would almost definitely NOT have watched it. Any time I see "quirky" in a network promo, I translate that into incoherent scripting and inconsistent characterization - and then run away and hide until the trauma has ended or (slightly less melodramatically) just not watch to begin with!

I don't really remember the trailer. I made the decision to watch it based on the blurb in TV Guide's 'new series' issue and the fact that I knew Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite and Ron Glass from previous TV shows.

I only knew Ron Glass for Barney Miller but that was about 20 years go wasn't it? Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite were unknown to me. Mind you, we only got Firefly on TV in 2005 - so I knew the names by then!

Yes, that was how I knew Ron Glass. I'm not sure I'd seen him in anything much after that. Nathan I knew from the soap opera One Life to Live and Jewel from Higher Ground. Because they were both Western Canadians - Jewel from Vancouver, even - I tend to follow their careers. I didn't go to see Saving Private Ryan because I knew Nathan was in it, of course, but I did watch for him.

I can say, however, that I did not watch Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place even though he was on there for a couple of years. (Incidentally, one of my 11 (!) Whedone-ite T-shirts has silhouettes of Mal, Jayne & Zoe in front of Serenity and under it says, "Two guys, a girl and a Firefly"! I love it.

11 T-shirts - now that's impressive!

Holy... Oh good god. No wonder the show barely got any viewers. That has to be a 'How NOT to do it' trailer. God.

Someone should run a "Television Un-Studies" course and use Fox as an example!
