Movie Review #27 - Superman Returns

Can't say I have liked many of the recent Superman incarnations but I loved this version. From beginning to end, this felt like a Superman movie should.

First check of the watch - huh? watch? what watch?

Brendon Routh just nails the part - both as Clark (without overdoing the stumbling hesitancy) and as Superman with just the right degree of grace and power. The jet plane/shuttle rescue is just perfect. It must be hard to write things like that because Superman's got to do it but it can't be too easy (where's the drama in that?) nor too hard (he's Superman for heaven's sake!) This gets that balance just right.

Loved the chaingun sequence on the roof and then the bullet "in the eye"!

Kevin Spacey gets Lex right too - that combination of manic glee and lethal intensity that Michael Rosenbaum does so well on Smallville. His scheme is a little nutty - but then Lex is, after all, just a little nutty too!

The final scenes on the new continent (or whatever the hell you can call it) are good too. The only thing that doesn't work is Kate Bosworth. Lois Lane was never a pushover and she really doesn't have the backbone in this that Lois should have. I'm not sure it's the writing either because there were a number of lines that could have been very different with a more forceful delivery but she goes with the wussy option time and time again. Everybody else does so well in this that it becomes quite noticeable after a while.

Overall, this was great and it is good to see yet another franchise get a great reboot - Batman and Bond have both made great starts to new versions of their own worlds. Let's hope this sustains Supeman's world, at least.
