Movie Review #23 - Hot Fuzz
Given that I have seen neither Spaced (ahem,
nixygirl?) nor Sean of the Dead, I went into this movie with pretty much no expectations - and came back out both amused and frustrated
First check of the watch - 35 minutes or so
Amused because this was a very funny film and with moments of sheer genius:
- Angel: What's the situation?
Wainwright: Two blokes and a fuck load of cutlery!
- Angel: I may not be a religious man, but I know the difference between right and wrong.
Reverend: Fuck you, grasshopper (and whips out BFG!)
Lots (and lots) of moments like that were just comedic perfection.
Frustrated though because the setup was painfully slow - and downright obvious too. It just plodded and plodded and seriously wondered what I was doing there. It improved once Angel got to the village but again, more slow and obvious setup.
Simon Pegg impressed me immensely - his intensity was such that, with his character played straight, he could have made an excellent quality cop procedural movie.
The other good part was the highly inventive ways many of the "murderer's" victims were killed - the church spire one was especially vivid!
Overall - a gem of a cop movie satire, marred only by a very slow setup.
