More thoughts on Twilight (Part One)
Joss is such teller of twisted tales that my prior certainty about who Twilight is is no longer so strong.
1. Twilight is someone we have met before - everybody says that but where does that come from?
It is not from Dark Horse's blurb about the issue. In fact that issue says " .... Buffy comes face to face with the new Big Bad ...." Perhaps it was from something that Scott Allie, Joss or Georges Jeanty said but now I can't find the quote. Anybody?
2. OK, let's take for granted that it is someone we have met before. Many people have assumed that it is a previous Big Bad. Let's look at that objectively:
S1 The Master - not only killed in Prophecy Girl but ground into little pieces by Buffy in When She Was Bad.
S2 Angelus - just not on all kinds of levels. He's stuck in HellLA and nothing that Twilight does sounds or feels like Angelus to me.
S3 The Mayor - big snake go boom. 'Nuff said!
S4 Adam - Buffy took his powercore out in Primeval but we never saw his body after that really. A new powercore could power him back up, I suppose. Given that the military are involved in the form of General Voll, they could have retrieved Adam after the end of S4. Nothing that Twilight said sounded like Adam, otoh.
S5 Glory/Ben - I will resist the temptation for all the lame (but still funny) "What, do we suspect that there's a connection between Ben and Glory?" jokes. We never saw Ben (or Glory for that matter) after Giles suffocated Ben but this just doesn't seem like Glory's MO - what would be her motive to attack Buffy this way?
S6 The Nerd Herd/Evil!Willow
Warren - well, he is back but Twilight seems to have skin .... otoh, Warren was one for gadgets including a jet pack to fly .... The misogyny did sound like something Warren could come up with. However, Warren seems to have been stuck at the bottom of Sunnycrater while Twilight was already active so the S8 timeline seems to rule him out.
Jonathon - dead and well and truly dead, I believe
Andrew - seems to be too much a part of the whole Slayer School set up to be Twilight
Evil!Willow - Willow seems to be back on track so just not at all likely. Given that Twilight's mission appears to be to drive magic from the world, it would not make sense for Willow to have that agenda.
S7 The First/Caleb - it is persistent and whilst the uber-vamp army was defeated, that would only be a temporary setback for The First. As soon as it regained all the energy lost in the defeat, it would be able to make a come back. Caleb was a very important tool for its manifestation in this world.
Tomorrow Part Two - the Little Bads and sundry others
