Another way to express it

Seeing all the fury that many of the re-made/adapted movies stir up amongst their respective fandoms, I though that we needed to redefine the "based on" claim that outrages everyone. Depending on close the movie was to the source, we could categorise them differently.

"Based on" - means it looks like, feels like and damn nearly is. A good example is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone.

"Adapted from" - means it is a lot like and probably catches the feel but not the detail.

"Loosely associated with" - means that there's some vague resemblance but it is fundamentally different from.

"Bears the same name but precious little else" - means, well, just that. Go see at your own risk if you are a fan of the source material because it may well break your heart seeing how they just bastardized your life's love - The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I'm looking at you right here!
